Chapter Two of the book, “Ezra Pound: an Imagist or an Ethnographer,” focuses on the role that Pound has played as the leader of the Imagist movement in the formation of a national ethnographic discourse. Pound’s Imagism, as the author Yunte Huang argues, is a part of the modern ethnography that reshapes the image of the Oriental language and culture.

Studying James Legge, Herbert Giles, Arthur Waley and Ezra Pound, the four most successful and influential translators from the late 19th century to the mid 20th century, the 452-page monograph intends to answer a basic question in the English translation of Chinese poetry: how shall we transform, convey and retain the content and style of Chinese poetry in English given the linguistic and cultural differences between the two languages? Chapter Five is devoted to Pound’s English translation of Cathay and The Classical Anthology Defined by Confucius.

It also gives a brief analysis of Pound’s mistranslation of Chinese poetry.

A poetess and a co-translator of The Orchid Boat with Kenneth Rexroth, Chung makes a thorough research into the influence of the Chinese cultural models on the development of American modern poetry, with special attention paid to the tight link between Pound and Chinese poetry. Regarding Pound’s translation of Chinese poetry as “creative translation”, chapter two of her book, “Canonization of Translation of Chinese Poetry,” analyzes the canonization of Pound’s translation and its aesthetic value. Chapter five, “Absorption and Transformation of Character Model of Chinese Poetry,” touches upon how Pound drew on the character model of Chinese poetry in his translation. Chapter six, “The Holistic Art View,” mentions how Pound learned from and regarded China’s holistic art pattern that combines poetry and painting.

As an extensive research into the influence of Chinese Poetry on American Modern Poetry, this 335-page monograph presents the ways Pound is inextricably linked to Chinese poetry and art. Section 4 of Chapter One, “A Comparison between the Influence of Chinese Poetry on Different Countries”, introduces Pound’s high praise for Chinese poetry in American Poetry Renaissance and his learning from Chinese poetry. Section 5 of Chapter Two, “Chinese Fine Arts”, discusses the influence of Chinese fine arts on Pound. Section 7 of Chapter Two, “Cathay of Ezra Pound”, probes into Pound’s English translation of Cathay. Section 8 of Chapter Three, “Confucianism and The Cantos,” examines the influence of Confucianism on Pound’s writing of The Cantos and translation of the Confucian Odes.

Chinese translations of thirteen poems by Ezra Pound are included in this book, including “ΔΏPIA,” “The Return,” “After Ch’u Yuan,” “Liu Ch’e,” “Fan-piece, for her Imperial Lord,” “Ts’ai Chi’h,” “In a Station of the Metro,” “The Garden,” “Alba,” “Heather,” “Albatre,” “The Encounter,” and “A Girl.” The translator Xiaolong Qiu points out that the most excellent poems of Pound are the translation and imitation of Chinese poems; however, they are often considered as Pound’s original works in some American anthologies.
